Apple AirTag used again for stalking, US man arrested for stalking ex-wife: Report

As good as the Apple AirTag is, there have been a lot of reports recently suggesting that time and time again people have used the coin-sized trackers for nefarious purposes – including stalking, and this time the latest case of Apple’s AirTag being misused is once again by a stalker. Police in Memphis, USA, arrested a man who tracked his ex-wife’s vehicle with an Apple AirTag.

According to a report by AppleInsider, the circumstances of this case are particularly troubling, as the accused allegedly planted roses in his ex-wife’s car after using AirTag to locate it.

The tracking device was later found by his ex-wife and Atkins has admitted that he set it up – stating that he only intended to track the whereabouts of their children.

Apple has issued an official statement about the stalking, with a company spokesperson confirming: “AirTag was created to help individuals locate their personal property, not to monitor individuals or their property. We strongly condemn any malicious application of our products.”

Apple added that “unwanted tracking has long been a societal problem, and we took this concern seriously when designing AirTag.” And “that’s why the

network is built with privacy in mind, uses end-to-end encryption, and why we innovated the first proactive system to warn you of unwanted tracking.”

“We hope this will start an industry trend where others will also offer such proactive warnings in their products,” an Apple spokesperson concluded.
